Love notes from real picnics, roadtrips & beach days.

Took my new Nutshell Cooler out for its first camping trip to Crested Butte over the 4th of July and I’m officially obsessed. It’s not only beautiful (seriously, so well-designed), but also super functional. It kept our ice cold for several days and held way more food than I expected. It’s the perfect size to keep in your car for any road trip and worked great at camp as a supplement to our larger coolers. We used it for drinks and smaller items so they were always easy to grab. Highly recommend!

Love this! Not only am I saving the earth by repurposing coconut shells, also get to camp with this cool cooler! Holds in the cold, doesn’t weigh much and folds away for quick storage!

Great multiuse cooler! A must for baseball parents! I've used it three times in the 7 days I've had it. The removable liner is the best part about it and it keeps everything ice cold! Will be buying another for our friends and family!

I have used this cooler on a couple of road trips and it has served me very well. I would definitely recommend it.

I used my Nutshell while traveling in Mexico to carry my breastmilk back to the US. It's so good! I love the color too.

The size is perfect and the colour is beautiful (boy did I have a tough time choosing), the nice cool blue is a great summer vibe. It's fantastic how packable it is, folding it down for storage is a great feature and keeping it in its tote means it stays tidy and out of the way. Overall you can't go wrong here. You'd be supporting a small business, you're supporting and encouraging sustainability and innovation. The only dilemma I had was “do I need one in each colour?”

Our Founding Story

Tamara and David outdoors
We're Tamara and David, two outdoor enthusiasts who met at Stanford's design school. Outside is our happy place, so we know that people who love the outdoors, want to protect the outdoors. So why is all gear made from plastic? We said no to virgin plastics and reintroduced nature’s very own insulation: coconut husk fibers.
Coconut husks upcycled into insulation fibers
Coconut husks are the original cooler, keeping water and meat fresh in the tropical heat. And they've been doing it for centuries. Yet they’re burned by the billions as the waste product of the coconut oil industry. Instead, we upcycle them into premium insulation that keeps ice frozen longer than plastics.
Farmers and fisherfolk in the Philippines
We discovered this while living on a small island in the Philippines called Lubang, where we were designing coolers for artisanal tuna fisherfolk and experimenting with new form factors and materials. The optimism and resourcefulness of these first customers inspire us every day, and taught us that nature is the best R&D lab.
How long does Nutshell keep ice?

Nutshell is built to keep ice cold for days. In real-life tests in the humid heat of the Philippines, ice stayed frozen for more than 48 hours, matching the Yeti Hopper Two and beating the Coleman Excursion, and several others in identical conditions. Your results will vary depending on ice ratio, ambient temperature, etc. therefore, we can't tell you exactly how long ice will last inside your Nutshell, but it will last longer than it would have inside most plastic alternatives!

How does coconut insulation work?

Coconut husk fibers are hollow and contain tons of tiny trapped air pockets, the same strategy that plastic foam insulation uses to reduce heat transfer. In fact, if you compare plastic foam and coconut fiber under a microscope, you’ll hardly see a difference.

Does Nutshell leak?

No! Our welded liner is completely leak proof. Plus it pops out for easy cleaning or to pour out ice melt at the end of your trip.

How big is Nutshell?

The 17L cooler is 16 x 11 x 9.5 in. (internal dimensions: 14 x 9.5 x 7.5 in.) and weights 6 lbs. It can fit 30 cans, 15 bottles, 5 wine bottles, or 12 pints of ice cream! And when you're done using it, it folds flat into a tote and makes storage a breeze.

What materials do you use?

In addition to our proprietary Coconut Fiber Insulation, we use a stain- and water-resistant shell made from recycled plastic bottles and a PFAS-free C0 Durable Water Repellent, and metal hardware.

Where do you make Nutshell?

We make Nutshell in the Philippines in partnership with coconut farmers and the best cooler factory in the world. We buy their leftover husks from coconut oil production!

What’s your return policy?

We offer a 100-Day Satisfaction Guarantee. If you don't love your Nutshell, reach out and we’ll make it right.
